NEWSFLASH! SEX IS NOT DIRTY: Six Ways to Change How You Think About Sex

Mon, 03/04/2013 - 22:33 -- josh

In the season premier of the hit series Duck Dynasty, Phil and Miss Kay, as they are known, are witnessed bantering back and forth about their sexual relationship.  Phil very clearly implies that he wants some “lovin’” and Miss Kay conveys that he isn’t getting any action until he cleans himself up.

Phil and Miss Kay, who are high school sweethearts, are at the top of this family hierarchy.  If you are a regular follower of the show, you’ll see that they have brought up a family on the foundation of God and godly principles.  It is not uncommon to hear them bring up God in conversation and each episode is usually ended with the family gathered around the dinner table where Phil leads them in a prayer.

Parenting Tip: Don't Ask Questions, Make Observations

Vignette #1

Your teenage daughter walks in the door from school and SLAMS it shut!  With her head down, eyebrows lowered, and bottom lip slightly puckered, she quickly stomps down the hall to her room and slams that door as well.  You follow her down the hall, gently open the door and politely say, “Honey, are you upset?

Vignette #2

Your three year old son is playing with his favorite toy.  As he gets deeper and deeper into imaginative play, he starts getting more and more excited, which can also be translated, rowdier and rowdier.  It’s inevitable at this point. You know it, your spouse knows it, and on some subconscious level, he probably knows it to – he’s about to hurt himself.  He runs to you in a fit of tears.  You look down at him with compassionate eyes and with a comforting tone say, “Did you hurt yourself?

Do either of these vignettes ring true for you?  These are just a couple of examples where we ask our children questions with answers that are too obvious.  In some situations, like the one with the teenage girl, your child will just blatantly lie.  She might say with obvious irritation in her voice, No, Mom/Dad. I’m fine!  In her mind, she’s thinking, If you don’t know, I’m not telling,” or, better yet, Duh!

Top 10 Christmas Characters in Therapy

Fri, 12/21/2012 - 16:29 -- josh

Well, we are well into the holiday season with Christmas only days away.  Many stores are having sales and holding late hours to accommodate last minute shoppers.  I am sure Santa, his elves, and his helpers are also working overtime as they gear up for the big gift delivery of 2012.

I neither work in retail nor am I employed by the North Pole, but my counseling doors have also remained opened this holiday season.  In fact, I have had an influx of some of the most interesting clients.  Some of these clients have agreed to allow me to share with you some of their therapeutic story.  Please note that each client mentioned below has given me written consent to allow me to release confidential information regarding their presenting problems, diagnoses, and treatment.
